What boaters can do

Published Oct. 10, 2005

Do not enter designated/posted sanctuaries for any reason.

Wear polarized sunglasses, which reduces glare on the surface of the water and enables a person to see a manatee underwater.

Slow down. Operate boat at idle/no wake speed when in areas known to have manatees present.

Remain 50 feet away from manatees when operating a power boat to prevent disturbance.

Stay in the center of the marked channel. Manatees have shown signs that they are avoiding heavy boat traffic areas. Channel depth reduces the likelihood of pinning or crushing manatees.

Stay out of seagrasses. Grass beds are prime manatee habitat. This includes areas where hydrilla and water hyacinths are present.

Don't discard fishing line, plastic bags and other litter.
