Rare fish found

Published Oct. 10, 2005

Don Zelasco of the Clearwater Marine Science Center examines the rare oarfish that washed up on Belleair Beach on Thursday. The fish is a deep-water dweller and lives in depths between 300 and 3,000 feet, according to Dennis Kellenberger, director of the Marine Science Center. He said the only other oarfish he knows of in Clearwater was brought to the center (then called Sea-O-Rama) in the 1950s. That fish is on display. This fish, approximately 9 feet long and weighing an estimated 50 pounds, is too rough to mount, Kellenberger said.
