Kickers to take on Navy squad in tourney opener

The St. Petersburg Kickers will play a soccer match against a Navy team from Whiting Field in Milton at 1 p.m. today at Walter Fuller Park, 7891 26th Ave. N in the first round of the U.S. National Open Cup tournament.

Several former Clearwater Central Catholic stars will play, including Navy Lt. Steve Whalen, a 1978 Clearwater Central Catholic graduate and former Tampa Bay Rowdies player. Ensigns P.J. Hogan and Brad Blackwelder, also CCC graduates, join Whalen on the Navy team. Two other former CCC standouts, Sean Callahan and Jeff Jones, will play for the Kickers.

Rugby: The Pelican Rugby Club opens its 1992 spring schedule today at Clearwater's Holt Avenue Youth Center against Space Coast, a team from the Melbourne area. The field is at 1259 Holt Ave. The Pelican club practices 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Riverfront Park in Tampa. For more information, call Jerry Paritz, 786-6632 or in Tampa at 289-5218.
