Boris Becker and Jim Courier face off today in the final of the Donnay Indoor Championship.
Becker, the No. 3 seed, gained the finals by defeating top-seeded Stefan Edberg 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday. Courier, the world's top player and No. 2 seed here, eliminated fifth-seeded Guy Forget 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in the semis.
The victory assured Courier of retaining the No. 1 ranking, which he took from Edberg last week. Courier would have lost the top spot if he had been beaten by Edberg in today's final.
There was little to choose between Becker and Edberg over the first two sets of their match. Edberg broke his opponent's serve in the ninth game of the first set and held his own service to take the set 6-4.
But Becker bounced back to take the second set by the same margin. In the third set, the German's powerful serve-and-volley game proved too much for Edberg, who never recovered from losing his serve in the fifth game.
Earlier, Courier won a close semifinal against Forget. In the first-set tiebreaker, Forget wasted two set points at 6-4 and Courier went on to win it 9-7.
The American broke Forget's serve in the third game of the second set and served out the set 6-4 without difficulty.
