Play ball! Tourney starts on Monday

Baseball begins Monday. Although the regular season does not start until next week, most Pinellas County teams will put on their uniforms in a 16-team preseason tournament.

Fourteen of the 15 Pinellas County Athletic Conference teams, plus Jesuit and Manatee will play in the Pinellas County Pre-Season Baseball Tournament, held at three sites (Seminole High, Dunedin Stadium and Englebert Complex). The other PCAC team, Lakewood, will join Shorecrest, and host St. Petersburg Catholic in a tournament later in the week (the tournament is undergoing a schedule change because Northside Christian did not have enough players).

The Pinellas County tournament runs every day with winners and consolation games. The championship is scheduled for Saturday, 7 p.m., at Seminole High. Dunedin High is the defending champion. The Falcons beat Dixie Hollins in the final, 5-2, last year. Please see the tournament schedule, For the Record.

Soccer: Brooksville-Hernando High boys soccer coach Rick Ahrens is organizing an under-age-18 club, the Suncoast Strikers, to compete in two youth soccer tournaments in England and tour the country this summer.

For more information, call Ahrens in the evening at (904) 666-1665.
