Residents in south Pinellas County called police and news agencies Saturday morning after hearing a thunderous boom and seeing puffs of smoke near the Sunshine Skyway bridge.
"It sounded like rumbling thunder," said Gulfport police officer Max Courtney. "We thought it might have been a sonic boom from an aircraft."
Instead, it was the state Department of Transportation (DOT) demolishing another segment of the old Skyway.
Usually, DOT notifies police agencies and the media when demolition will take place, but this time, everyone was in the dark. "We apologize for this one," said DOT spokeswoman Lee Royal.
