The March 1 deadline for filing original applications for homestead exemption, and other personal exemptions, is fast approaching.
Permanent Florida residents are entitled to an exemption of $25,000 from the total value of their home. Those filing are required to own the property, use it as their primary residence and occupy the home on Jan. 1 of the year they file for such an exemption.
Applicants must file in person at the Pinellas County Courthouse, 315 Court St., Clearwater; or either of the two property appraiser's branch offices, 1800 66th St. N, St. Petersburg, or 29269 U.S. 19 N, Northside Square Shopping Center, Clearwater.
Applicants must bring proof of ownership (copy of the deed, real estate closing papers or insurance documents); evidence of permanent Florida residency (Florida driver's license, automobile registration or voter registration card); a death certificate or obituary notice for widow's/widower's exemption; and proper certification for a disability exemption.
