Overnight fire ruins contents of produce shop

A fire that authorities called suspicious gutted a Clearwater Beach business early Monday, causing about $45,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported in the blaze at the Beach Produce & Deli, 600 Mandalay Ave.

The fire was reported at 12:17 a.m., and the building was engulfed in flame when firefighters arrived, said Clearwater Deputy Fire Chief Dave Kinsey. He identified the owner of the business as Nick Polemis.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about 30 minutes, but the building's contents and furnishings were destroyed, Kinsey said.

"It was a very fast fire," he said.

He said the fire was suspicious.
