Vikes hold off district-rival Packers

Northeast clinched the top seed in next week's Class 4A, District 7 tournament, but, in beating Largo 72-67 Tuesday, the Vikings learned how difficult the district is.

"Anybody can knock you off," said Northeast coach Dave Redding, whose team survived a two-point win over Largo two weeks ago. The Packers (10-12, 6-7 in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference) will be seeded fifth or sixth.

Northeast (17-6, 8-4) trailed until the second half. The Vikes overcame Largo's rebounding edge (44-27) by forcing 19 turnovers (to 10 by Northeast).

With the score 51-51, Largo lost the ball three straight times. At 55-55, Northeast's Carlos Golden (29 points) hit a three-pointer and the Packers never caught up.

With his team down 67-65 with 59 seconds left, Largo's Bill Millman missed a free throw and teammate Tom Newbill rebounded. Golden intercepted a pass and raced for a dunk to seal the game.

Millman finished with 18 points and 19 rebounds.

Lakewood 90, Pinellas Park 53: Lakewood (22-1, 12-1) moved one win from its second PCAC title in three years and can clinch the title Friday against Boca Ciega. Lakewood, which has won 20 games in a row, was led by Anthony Brown's 22 points.

Dixie Hollins 72, St. Petersburg 67: Al Morris hit five three-pointers and scored a team-high 22 points as the Rebels defeated the Green Devils. It was the first time this season the county's leading scorer, Dametri Hill (26.1 points per game), did not lead Dixie Hollins in scoring.
