County limits boats around Mullet Key

PINELLAS

The County Commission agreed Tuesday to put about 6,000 acres of sea grass near Fort De Soto Park under county management, about 2,000 acres of which will be off-limits to motorboats. It was the kind of compromise that everyone said they could live with but no one wholeheartedly embraced. Environmentalists were not thrilled because officials softened an earlier proposal to ban boat propellers from 2,400 acres around Mullet, Tarpon and Indian keys. Commercial fishermen also were not pleased because they will lose some of the most fertile shrimp and mullet areas.
