State officials will travel to Hernando County today to investigate reports that a private gun club has cleared a 300-foot-long road on state-owned, environmentally sensitive land in the Chassahowitzka Swamp. Col. J.O. Brown, regional director of the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, says he gave the Hernando Sportsman's Club permission to cross the recently purchased state land to get to its isolated property in northwest Hernando, where the club is building a rifle range. He said the club merely removed some saplings on an existing roadway to gain access to its land. But residents familiar with the forest say the club carved a wide road from a tiny, overgrown truck track.
