Saint Leo's first win in SSC was shocker

The Saint Leo men's basketball team finally got a conference win Saturday, and no, it wasn't over next-to-last Barry. After dropping eight games in a row, the Monarchs downed Eckerd 93-92 in a huge upset.

Eckerd entered the game tied with Rollins for first in the Sunshine State Conference with a 6-1 record. Saint Leo came in 0-8 in the conference and 6-16 overall.

With one second left, Tyrone Graves sank the first of two free throws to put the Monarchs up. Graves had scored six seconds earlier to tie it and was fouled after Robert Gandy intercepted an inbounds pass. Graves finished with 24 points; Jason Sartor had 23.

Saint Leo, now 7-16 overall, was at Florida Southern Wednesday night. Florida Southern entered the game 5-3 in the conference, 7-16 overall.

Saint Leo women's basketball: The Monarchs remained winless in the conference after a 78-69 loss to Eckerd. Marnie Wiegman led Saint Leo with 25 points; Melissa Olin had 21. The Monarchs shot just 29-for-76 (38 percent) from the field in the loss and dropped to 0-9 in the conference, 5-17 overall. They faced Florida Southern (7-1, 15-7) Wednesday.

SSC tournaments set: Dates have been announced for the Sunshine State Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments. The women's tournament will be March 2-4, the men's March 5-7. Each host will be the regular-season champion. The top seed of the seven-team conference receives a first-round bye.

Saint Leo stat chat: Graves is third in scoring in the SSC with a 19.9 average. Joey Brauer leads the conference in steals with 59 through 23 games; Graves is tied for second with 49. Brauer is second in the conference in assists with 131. Randy Copher is the SSC's second-leading rebounder with 197.

Saint Leo softball: The Monarchs improved to 3-1 by winning both games of a doubleheader against North Florida at home Tuesday. Alice Astling picked up both wins as Saint Leo beat North Florida 3-1 in the first game and 1-0 in the extra-inning second game. Marivel Gutierez doubled in the first game and tripled in the second.

P-HCC softball: Pasco-Hernando Community College improved to 2-2 by winning both games of a doubleheader against Edison on Friday.

Sheila Canaday and Micki Bolton led an 11-hit attack in an 8-5 win, and Jennifer Coleman had three hits in an 8-7 victory. The Conquistadors opened the season with a pair of losses to St. John's River. Their next home game is against Hillsborough on Feb. 29.

P-HCC baseball: Steve Winterling's squad dropped to 2-4 with a 7-5 loss to Valencia on Saturday. P-HCC played St. Petersburg JC Wednesday, and will host Santa Fe today at 3 p.m. at the West Campus in New Port Richey.
