An older couple confronted a 10-year-old boy this week, intending to ask that he do chores to pay for a window they said he broke at their home.
In response, the boy grabbed a steak knife with a 4-inch blade, approached the couple outside and screamed, "I will cut you all to pieces," according to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report.
"We weren't scared of him at the time," the 61-year-old wife said Thursday. "But after it was all over, we were scared."
The trouble started about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the child, whose name is being withheld because of his age, allegedly threw a rock and broke a window in their home in the Gardens of Beacon Square subdivision. The couple said they went to the boy's house two doors away to ask him to do work around their yard as compensation.
But first, they said, they wanted to talk to his stepfather, who wouldn't come to the door.
The retired couple started to leave when the boy grabbed a knife from the kitchen and followed them into the street with it, records show. He never got closer than 10 feet, the couple said Thursday.
"You m----rf-----s get the hell out of here," the child shouted, according to the sheriff's report. "I am going to kill you. I will break the rest of your windows."
"He was serious," the wife said Thursday. "He came at us running."
The couple went home and called the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. About an hour and a half later, Deputy Curtis Rose charged the 10-year-old with two counts of aggravated assault.
The boy was released to his mother before midnight.
"I don't know where the little animals come from," said the husband, a 67-year-old retired plumber. "Not even a slap on the wrist is going to help these kids. They're not afraid. They know nothing's going to happen to them."
But the couple said they won't let troublesome youths intimidate them.
"We're playing it by ear," the wife said. "I don't think he'll be a problem anymore, but if he is, we'll just call the police."
