Gladiators surge past Bayshore

Gibbs used an 11-2 run in the final three minutes to upset host Bradenton Bayshore 46-43 Thursday in the first round of the Class 3A, District 11 girls basketball tournament.

Senior center Wanda Joiner led the Gladiators with 9 points, 17 rebounds, 7 blocks and 5 steals. She also made four free throws in the final minute of play.

Bayshore finished the season 17-8.

In earlier action, Lisa Rowe and Gundaula Henderson combined for 46 points to lead third-ranked Lakewood to a 74-39 romp over Osceola. Rowe scored 21 of her 25 points in the first half, when the Spartans built a 47-19 lead. Nikki Craft finished with 19 for Osceola.

Gibbs (10-7) plays Lakewood (17-2) at 7:30 tonight in one semifinal, and Punta Gorda-Charlotte meets Bradenton Southeast at 6 p.m. Charlotte beat Venice 78-48 Thursday, and Southeast ousted Port Charlotte 48-38.

Spongers against Eagles

TAMPA _ Tarpon Springs used a three-point barrage to overcome a 25-20 halftime deficit and defeat East Lake 52-41 in the semifinals of the 3A-District 10 tournament.

Maria Kourkoutis keyed the assault for the Spongers (11-11), hitting five of 10 shots from three-point distance and scoring 21 points. Andrea Fawcett added 15 points.

Missy McDevitt's 15 points paced the Eagles (7-14).

Tarpon Springs faces host Tampa Bay Vo-Tech tonight. Jefferson joined them by beating winless Plant 64-35, overcoming a slow start with a 27-5 first-half run. The Dragons face Robinson tonight.

Offense, defense excel

as Barons top Mustangs

ST. PETERSBURG _ Kelly Klesius scored 23 points and Michelle Boyers had 11 assists to lead host St. Petersburg Catholic to a 63-26 win over Northside Christian in the first round of the Class A, District 10 tournament.

The Barons held the Mustangs to two points in the opening period and five points in the final quarter.

"We're saving our best for last," Barons coach Gary Preston said. "I'm not showing our full deck tonight."

St. Petersburg Catholic moved to 22-4 and faces Lakeside Christian, a 39-28 winner over Shorecrest, today at 6:15 p.m.

In other action, top-seeded Bradenton Christian defeated Oldsmar Christian 54-20. Bradenton Christian will face Sarasota Christian, which beat Keswick 58-41, today at 8 p.m.
