Mrs. Mary Lemke of St. Petersburg celebrated her 101st birthday Jan. 5 when the Alhambra II nursing home gave a party in her honor.
She was born in Curtis, Ohio, and it was there that she developed an interest in music. When she was 8, she played organ for the church. During the Depression she and her late husband, August, had a dance orchestra that played in communities around Toledo, Ohio.
Mrs. Lemke's family said she loves children and has been active in their behalf. During the Depression, she repaired used children's clothing for the needy, and she is a life member of the PTA Council in Toledo.
Mrs. Lemke came to St. Petersburg in 1987. Now a resident of Alhambra II nursing home, she enjoys dancing, bingo and watching horse-racing on television.
Mrs. Lemke has a son, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her daughter is deceased.
