A late-night game of hide-and-seek between two Carrollwood youths Wednesday ended in charges of sexual battery against a 13-year-old boy, Hillsborough sheriff's officials said Friday.
The boy and an 11-year-old girl who know each other from school were playing hide-and-seek in woods near their homes near N Dale Mabry Highway and Stall Road about 10 p.m., authorities said.
Sheriff's Capt. Roger Dixon said the girl was hiding, and when the boy found her he assaulted her with his hand, then tried to rape her.
Deputies said the girl pushed the boy away, ran home and an hour later told her mother.
The girl's parents called authorities and took her to Tampa General Hospital for a rape examination. The results of the examination were unavailable Friday.
Sheriff's Capt. J.
R. Miller said the boy was arrested and taken to Hillsborough Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
"We have a statement from the boy which corroborates the evidence," Miller said.
Sgt. Gordon Davis, head of juvenile operations for the Sheriff's Office, said the case is still under investigation. He said no decision has been made about whether to turn the case over to the state attorney's office for prosecution.
That office will decide whether to try the boy as an adult or a juvenile.
Davis said he does not know whether the boy has a record of previous problems or whether the girl received any kind of rape counseling. He said it is routine for a victim of sexual battery to be referred for counseling.
None of the sheriff's deputies would say why the children were playing together so late at night.
