Pitcher Ray Ortiz threw a three-hitter and drove in the winning run as Jefferson defeated visiting Armwood 1-0 Friday in the season-opener for both teams.
Ortiz (1-0) struck out 10 batters and walked two. The senior got into a two-out jam in the fourth inning, giving up singles to Shawn Covey and Keith Freda. Ortiz then got Darren Marchetta to fly out to centerfield to end the inning.
In Jefferson's half of the fifth inning, Eric Garcia lined a two-out single to centerfield before Butch Delgado drew a walk. Ortiz then drilled a single into centerfield, scoring pinch-runner Fred Martin.
"Ray is just a very good athlete," Jefferson coach Pop Cuesta said. "He's an unorthodox hitter, and I had second thoughts about letting him hit in the fifth inning, but I stuck with him."
