Chris Cole scored on a pass from Brian Zellner 12 seconds into the second overtime of the Class 3A, Section III title match, giving fourth-ranked Jesuit a 1-0 victory over unranked Cypress Lake.
The victory moves the Tigers (17-5-4) into the state tournament next week in Tampa, Jesuit's fifth such appearance in six years. Cypress Lake (16-1-2) suffered its first loss of the season.
Cole, Jesuit's top scorer with 19 goals, netted the game-winner without a Cypress Lake player touching the ball. On a set play, Cole pushed the kickoff to Zellner on the right wing and received a return pass. Cole then took one touch and struck the ball off the left post and into the net past Cypress Lake goalkeeper Sal Pirrone.
Jesuit dominated the first half, but Cypress Lake seized the momentum in the second half. Bill Rufener missed a chance to give Cypress Lake its first sectional title when he broke free for a one-on-one against Tigers keeper Erik Simms with 5:51 remaining in regulation. Rufener's shot sailed high, and Jesuit freshman keeper Erik Simms earned his ninth shutout of the season.
