St. Petersburg rallies to beat Manatee, gain 4A-8 title game

St. Petersburg overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to defeat Bradenton Manatee 69-58 in the semifinals of the Class 4A, District 8 girls tournament.

The Green Devils (14-6) play host Sarasota Riverview for the district title today at 5 p.m.

St. Petersburg's Sabrina Herring led all scorers with 23 points, and Foster added 18 for the Green Devils. Danatte Gartner paced Manatee (10-17) with 21.

Other tournament action

3A-10: Robinson 52, Jefferson 50 _ With five seconds left in overtime, Robinson (7-13) was down to three players but held on for a 52-50 overtime win over Jefferson (7-14) in the opener of the girls Class 3A, District 10 semifinal at Tampa Bay Tech.

In the other semifinal, Tampa Bay Vo-Tech (8-12) pulled out a 43-38 victory over Tarpon Springs (11-12) and will play Robinson for the district title tonight at 7.


3A-11: Lakewood 60, Gibbs 40 _ Lisa Rowe had 26 points and 20 rebounds Friday night to lead Lakewood past Gibbs 60-40 in the semifinals of the Class 3A, District 11 tournament in Bradenton.

Defending champion Bradenton Southeast topped Charlotte 72-68 in the other semifinal and plays Lakewood (18-2) at 7:30 p.m. tonight for the district championship.

None of the Gladiators were able to score in double figures. Radiah Corn led Gibbs with eight points.


2A-11: CCC 58, Berkeley Prep 56 _ Diane Jula, Clearwater Central Catholic's diminutive point guard, sank a game-winning five-foot shot with one second to go to lead the Marauders past Berkeley Prep 58-56 in the Class 2A, District 11 semifinal matchup. Cardinal Mooney edged Palmetto 42-39 in the other semifinal game.

The Marauders (17-10) relied on a strong offensive performance by Claire Roach, who sank a game-high 32 points. Jula, a 5-foot-2 point guard, added 14.

The Marauders will try to stop Cardinal Mooney (19-11) and their 6-foot-4 center Tammy Gardner in today's 8 p.m. final.


A-10: St. Petersburg Catholic 59, Lakewood Christian 47 _ St. Petersburg Catholic pulled away late in the third quarter to beat Lakeside Christian 59-47 in a Class A, District 10 semifinal.

SPC plays Bradenton Christian tonight at 7:30 p.m. for the title.
