TAMPA BAY Florida, U.S.A.

Bonjour,

Remember when the Olympics pretended amateurism? Today, not only do pros compete and receive bonuses from commercial sponsors for high finishes, but some countries pay cash for medals won. While the U.S. offers no such paychecks, France promises 250,000 francs (about $45,000) for gold, $22,000 for silver or $15,000 for bronze. Germany goes cheaper but deeper, paying $9,200 for a gold medal, $6,100 for silver, $4,500 for bronze, and all the way to $1,950 for eighth place.
