The Cincinnati Reds have put together a starting rotation with tremendous potential. Here's a look at the top four starters:
Jose Rijo, 26, right-handed. Has 68-58 record in parts of eight major-league seasons with the Yankees, A's and Reds. Was 14-8 in the Reds' 1990 championship season and the MVP of the World Series. Was career-best 15-6 last year with a 2.51 ERA (second-best in NL) and .219 opponents batting average (second in NL) despite missing five weeks with a fracture in his right ankle.
Tom Browning, 31, left-handed. Has 107-75 record in parts of eight seasons with the Reds. Workhorse has averaged 15 victories, 36 starts and 235 innings over the past seven seasons. Was 14-14 last year, with 4.18 ERA. Won career-high 15 games in 1989 and 1990.
Tim Belcher, 30, right-handed. Has 50-38 record in parts of five seasons with the Dodgers. His 2.62 ERA was fourth in the NL last year _ the fourth time in five seasons he had ERA under 3.00. Has averaged 193 innings over past four seasons. Won career-high 15 games in 1989.
Greg Swindell, 27, left-handed. Has 60-55 record in six major-league seasons with the lowly Indians. Was No. 1 draft pick in 1986 and was promoted to Indians after pitching just three games in the minors. Has averaged 13 victories and nearly 220 innings pitched over the past four years. Won career-high 18 games in 1988.
