Former U.S. Rep. Bill Grant will open his campaign to unseat U.S. Sen. Bob Graham with a four-city tour this week, his campaign office said.
Grant represented the Tallahassee area as a Democratic congressman. In 1988 he switched to the Republican Party and in 1990 lost his bid for a third term to Democrat Douglas "Pete" Peterson, despite campaign help from President Bush.
Grant has been testing the political waters for months for a run against Graham, a one-term senator and two-term governor, and traveled to more than half of Florida's 67 counties before announcing his plans to run.
The former Madison banker has scheduled news conferences to formally announce his campaign Monday in Orlando, Tampa and Miami and Tuesday in Tallahassee.
