Baylor 49, SMU 7: Tailback Kendrick Bell ran for two touchdowns and backup quarterback Adrian Robinson added a pair of scores as Baylor (2-3, 1-1) crushed SMU in Waco, Texas. Baylor led 35-0 at halftime. SMU was depleted by an NCAA-mandated suspension of 12 players, including seven starters, who sold books paid for by the university.

Southern Miss 33, Tulsa 24: Lance Nations, a senior from Tampa's Plant High, kicked a 21-yard field goal with five seconds left to snap a tie and Southern Mississippi (3-2) then picked off a desperation pass to beat Tulsa (1-4) in Hattiesburg, Miss. After Nations' kick, Terryl Ulmer picked off a desperation pass by Tulsa's Gus Frerotte at Southern Miss' 30. Ulmer ran it back to the 8 before pitching to Eugene Harmon, who scored the touchdown as time expired.
