A tornado touched down in Spring Hill on Saturday afternoon, damaging the roof of the Spring Hill Fire and Rescue District's Station 4 and damaging nearby St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
According to initial reports, there were no injuries, but the tornado, which apparently proceeded south down Mariner Boulevard, also damaged eight to 10 other structures, including Springstead High School, officials said over radio broadcasts. Damage ranged from moderate to severe.
Saturday's weather also may have caused the death of a 40-year-old Port Richey taxicab driver. Photo, Page 3.
Officials reported no flooding in coastal communities in either Citrus or Hernando county.
Organizers canceled Spring Hill's 22nd annual chicken plucking contest because of the rain. The rest of the festival, including entertainment, was moved inside the VFW hall on Spring Hill Drive.
