POWs and MIAs were honored Sept. 21 at a special meeting of the Lutz/Land O'Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4932.
A specially marked chair was dedicated in remembrance of all veterans still unaccounted for, and it will become a permanent part of all post meetings.
Cmdr. Joe Gault, Post 4932 and its auxiliary were commended by guest speaker U.S. Rep. Michael Bilirakis for all their hard work and dedication to area veterans.
VFW District 12 officers who attended the meeting were "Spike" Charles, commander; Ruth Getz, auxiliary president; Ed Yerkes Jr., vice commander; Wayne Friley, quartermaster; and Delana Oliver, past district commander. Other VFW, DAV, AMVETS and American Legion members and their auxiliaries also attended.
Post 4932 also has been helping with voter registration. In June, members of the post and auxiliary were deputized to register Hillsborough County voters.
Since July 4, volunteers have worked every Saturday at local Kash n' Karry stores to sign up voters, and at a post-supported activity night, someone suggested registering patients at James A. Haley VA Hospital, according to James Fisher, senior vice commander.
Fisher worked with Barbara Clark, voluntary service coordinator at the hospital, to arrange a time and place for the registration.
On Sept. 4, Al Ordiway, Alton Phelps, Kayjaun Fisher and Anna Volkman registered about 60 people. Clark and her staff have worked to obtain absentee ballots for patients who can't leave the hospital on election day.
