Behind the microphone


John Kelly will provide play-by-play and color commentary on 35 Sunshine Network telecasts, 10 WTOG-Ch.

44/Lightning Television Network telecasts and 48 regular-season and preseason games on WQYK-AM (1010) and the Lightning Radio Network.

Kelly, 32, was the voice of the St. Louis Blues on television and radio, where he replaced his father, legendary broadcaster Dan Kelly, who died in February 1989.

John Kelly was with the Blues for three seasons. During the 1988-89 season, he handled radio play-by-play for the New York Rangers and the American Hockey League's Adirondack Red Wings. Kelly also spent the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons with the Adirondack Red Wings. He began his professional broadcasting career with St. Catharines of the AHL in 1983-84.


Danny Gare will serve as color commentator for all 35 cable telecasts on Sunshine Network and all 10 telecasts on WTOG-Ch. 44.

Gare, 38, had been a member of the Buffalo Sabres' radio and television broadcast team since 1988.

Gare played 13 seasons in the NHL for Buffalo, Detroit and Edmonton. He finished tied for the league lead in scoring with 56 goals during the 1979-80 season. He also had a 50-goal season in 1975-76 and ended his career with 354 goals and 331 assists in 827 games.


Larry Hirsch will call the action for 45 regular-season games on WQYK-AM, the Lightning's flagship station, and the Lightning Radio Network, when the games are being televised.

Hirsch, 42, was the voice of the New Jersey Devils for four seasons, including their first season in 1982-83. His first NHL broadcast job was in 1976 as play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Barons.

Hirsch was a producer and announcer on WNEW-AM and WFAN-AM in New York for the past four years. From 1983-85, he called Houston Astros games on Home Sports Entertainment and KXTH-TV in Houston.
