The Admiral Farragut boys and Lakewood High girls will be out to retain their titles today in the City Cross Country Championship at Lakewood High Park. Varsity races begin at 6 p.m.
Dixie Hollins, led by Chris Schmidt, will challenge for the boys title. The Rebels beat the defending champion Blue Jackets at the Cougar Invitational two weeks ago. The individual girls race will feature Kristin Conner of Lakewood, who has the fastest time in the county this season, and Marjorie Schmidt of Dixie. Schmidt won by 11 seconds when they competed on Sept. 8 at Lakewood.
Preliminary races for junior varsity runners will start at 5 p.m. for girls and 5:30 for boys.
Pinellas Park football: Pinellas Park High School, hit hard by a tornado on Saturday, might seek an alternate site for its game against Dixie Hollins on Friday. The Patriots lost their scoreboard, and the bleachers and press box were damaged.
"We are trying to assess how bad we are," said assistant principal David Barnes, who expects to make a decision this afternoon.
Northeast and Clearwater are among the possible alternate sites, Barnes said.
Tarpon Springs volleyball: Tarpon Springs took first place in the Florida High School Rotary Invitational held Friday and Saturday on the Florida State campus in Tallahassee.
The Spongers beat Florida High School 15-6, 15-3 in the final. They also placed three players on the all-tournament team: senior setter Tanya Roe, senior hitter Marnie Will, and junior hitter Jaime Bielenda.
