Emily Stearns, mother of U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns, died Monday. She was 86.
Mrs. Stearns died of heart failure at Marion Community Hospital, the Ocala Republican's office said in a statement.
The Allentown, Pa., native lived in Washington from 1936 until the death of her husband, Clifford R. Stearns, in 1970. She then moved to Ocala, where she lived with her son until her death. Her husband was a U.S. Navy veteran and Justice Department attorney.
A graduate of Simmons College in Boston, Mrs. Stearns did graduate work at the University of Denver. In 1973, she published a children's book, Golden Sentinel.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, David L. Newlin and Harold E. Newlin. She is survived by her son Clifford B., his wife Joan, and their three sons; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Louis Amram of Philadelphia.
Visitation was scheduled for today at Hiers Funeral Home, with memorial services and burial planned for Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.
