Four commuters crushed

The wreckage of a car crushed by a sheet metal roll sits along the northbound curb on Interstate 190 in Buffalo, N.Y., Monday. Five sheet metal rolls, each weighing 3{ tons, fell from a semitrailer truck during morning rush hour, crushing three cars and killing all four people inside. The southbound truck had been hauling two trailers loaded with the rolls. As the driver changed lanes, the rear trailer overturned and hurled five rolls over a short concrete barrier separating the lanes, said state police Lt. Jack Fay. "Everything just came over the concrete wall," said Bill Deare, who was driving a few cars behind the crash. "I thought it was a tank." Killed were Shane Hill, 49, and his wife, Louise Hill, 51, of Lackawanna; Patricia Krug, 42, of Buffalo; and Mary Edsell, 38, of Buffalo. The truck driver, Philip Morris, 34, was uninjured. No charges had been filed. Investigators had not determined what caused the steel to fall off the truck.
