Monk accused of forging drug prescriptions

A Saint Leo Abbey monk was arrested Monday on a charge of forging prescriptions for a narcotic painkiller.

Authorities say Donald Melanson, 45, received 1,320 capsules of Darvon 65 during the past 13 months. As of Tuesday, Melanson had been released from the Central Pasco Detention Center on his own recognizance.

Although Abbot Patrick of Saint Leo Abbey did not comment Tuesday on the charges against Melanson, he did say he felt it was wrong to print articles based on unproved allegations because of possible damage to the accused's reputation.
