A federal grand jury Tuesday handed down the first federal indictment against a person allegedly filing a false disaster relief application after Hurricane Andrew, authorities said.
Mary Beggs, using the alias of Rosy Younger, submitted an application for federal assistance, claiming serious damage to her residence in Dade County, said Miami U.S. Attorney Robert Martinez.
But Ms. Beggs was living in an apartment in the Fort Lauderdale area when the hurricane struck on Aug. 24, prosecutors said.
Had her claim been processed, she could have received as much as $11,500 in federal disaster relief.
The fraud was discovered based on a telephone call to the Federal Emergency Management Agency hot line, Martinez said.
Ms. Beggs faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
