Children win in reading program

The Tampa Educational Cable Consortium had its 1992 Summer Reading Club Roundup Party on Sept. 19 at the Henry B. Plant Museum on the campus of the University of Tampa.

About 168 elementary school children participated in the program.

The Summer Reading Club is a reading incentive program that promotes literacy and encourages reading as a leisure activity among children ages 4 to 12.

Members earn points for the books they read over the summer and receive extra points for book reports.

There were 47 readers who finished the program with at least 1,200 points.

Two readers were presented with prizes as rewards for having the highest number of points.

Craig Douglas of the Children's Museum of Tampa presented Alrene Hicks, 7, with a family membership to the museum for earning 2,420 points.

Anne Hartmann of the Museum of Science and Industry announced Arlencia Hicks, 9, as the top reader with 2,500 points.

Arlencia was awarded a certificate for a Challenger Center birthday party for 18 people at MOSI's Challenger Exhibit.
