The Cuban Club of Tampa has been struggling to rebuild the membership and financial security it once enjoyed. But the club received a boost recently when Sutherlin Nissan donated a top-of-the-line Maxima to the fund-raising efforts.

Karen Sutherlin, owner of the dealership, learned of the financial difficulties of the 200-member organization and presented the $25,000 car to club vice president Raul Lavin.

"She heard about the plight that the Cuban Club was in and wanted to help. She's just a citizen that likes the idea of doing some charity work," Lavin said.

Magin Maseda, a club member and friend of Sutherlin, said Sutherlin read about the club's needs and thought it would be a good opportunity to reaffirm the company's commitment to the community.

Lavin said the Cuban Club is planning a fund-raising event for November that will include the car and raise money to help pay the mortgage.

"We plan to raise $25,000, hopefully $50,000," he said.

The club also is holding a fund-raiser Oct. 17 at the newly renovated Cuban Club Patio. The eventwill feature a "tropicana international" theme, a floor show presented by Burdines, entertainment by Franco and a drawing for a trip for two to Madrid.
