LaMantia Athletic takes over first in softball league

A battle for first place in the upper division of the Hernando County Family YMCA's men's softball league took place Monday, with LaMantia Athletic Club taking over sole possession of the top spot.

LaMantia edged David Love Homes 7-6 as Frank Varela hit a two-run homer and a solo shot. Rick Perslicka had a two-run shot for David Love.

With the win, LaMantia (12-2) leads by a game over David Love (11-3) and by 2{ over Nightmare Records (10-5). On Wednesday, Nightmare lost to David Love 9-3, then dropped a 6-3 decision Monday to Barriba's. Two of Barriba's three wins this season have come at Nightmare's expense.

Also on Monday, Nightmare capped its doubleheader with a 17-12 win against Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Sterling beat Capone's 18-6.

In the lower division, Hernando Today beat Oak Hill 10-2 Tuesday to maintain sole possession of first place at 11-2. Also on Tuesday, Instant Rain beat Benedetti Furniture 20-2, and Checkers beat Alpine Pools 7-6.

Checkers (10-3) stands a game behind Hernando Today, while Instant Rain (9-4) dropped to sole possession of third.

Tournament softball: A United States Slowpitch Softball Association Class C and D qualifier will be held at the Hernando County Family YMCA in Spring Hill Oct. 17-18.

The entry fee is $135 and two Blue Dot softballs. For further information, call North Suncoast USSSA coordinator Steve Carmack at (813) 849-2717 by Oct. 15.

Golf: The Hernando County Recreation Division is offering adult golf lessons two days a week for three weeks beginning Oct. 12. Saturday classes will begin Oct. 31.

All lessons will be held at County Line Golf Range, 9201 County Line Road, Spring Hill. Cost is $35 per player, and Buzz Walker will be the instructor.

The schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays (Oct. 12-28) _ Short game (Basic II), 11 a.m.-noon; Beginner (Basic I), noon-1 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays (Oct. 13-29) _ Intermediate with woods, 11 a.m.-noon; Long irons, woods and driver, noon-1 p.m.; Beginner (Basic I), 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Saturdays (Oct. 31-Nov.21) _ Short game (Basic II), 9-10:30 a.m.; Beginner (Basic I), 10:30 a.m.-noon; Intermediate with woods, 1-2:30 p.m.

Volleyball: Individuals or teams looking to join the Hernando County Family YMCA's fall co-ed league can still sign up by coming to the Hernando County Family YMCA or calling 688-9622.

Harry Johnson of the YMCA had originally hoped the league would begin play the second week of October, but as of yet there aren't enough teams. Individuals are encouraged to sign up as well as teams. For more information, call Johnson at 688-9622.
