Nine Northwest PTA/PTSAs have joined to sponsor a Candidates Forum on Oct. 19 at Gaither High School.
Sherry Reber, PTA president at Cecile Essrig Elementary School, said this is the first time so many local units of the association have worked together to plan and organize an event.
The idea for the forum was the result of parent requests and surveys, and the initial process was formulated at the Florida PTA conference through discussions with several PTA presidents.
The candidates, who represent districts in the schools' attendance area, were invited by registered mail the week of Sept. 20. Holly Redell, PTSA president at Ben Hill Junior High School, is receiving confirmation from the candidates.
The candidates invited include John Grant and Mary Figg, State Senate District 13; Malcolm Beard and Fran Davin, State Senate District 23; Tom Ash and Brian Rush, State House of Representatives District 47; and Victor Crist and Carol Palomino, State House of Representatives District 47.
Each candidate will have three minutes to express his or her views and opinions, and a question-and-answer session will follow.
The sponsoring groups, in addition to Cecile Essrig PTA and Ben Hill PTSA, are Gaither High School PTSA, Buchanan Junior High School PTSA, Northwest Elementary PTA, Claywell Elementary PTA, Schwarzkopf Elementary PTA, Citrus Park Elementary PTA and Carrollwood Elementary PTA.
The forum begins at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Gaither, 16200 N Dale Mabry Highway.
