School Board joins disparity study

The Hillsborough County School Board agreed Tuesday to spend $40,000 and join several organizations in a disparity study to see if there has been discrimination in the awarding of construction jobs. The School Board also decided to change its program to encourage minority businesses to participate in construction jobs. In the future, the district's minority business enterprise manager will review all construction projects and seek participation from all appropriate minority construction companies. In the past, contractors have handled the job of seeking minority bids. Minority contractors complained to the school board about the number of contracts going to businesses owned by minorities. Blacks shared in a minuscule number of contracts in the last six months of 1991. School officials, in turn, said they would work on minority participation.
