Share can help stretch food money

The Share Food Program is designed for all families who want to stretch their food dollars.

It is not necessary to be needy in order to participate.

Registration for the Share program is scheduled at various local churches Friday and Saturday with distribution day Oct. 24 at each host site.

To receive $28 to $30 worth of food, which includes 6 to 7 pounds of meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables, dessert and staples, recipients must register on time and pay $13 in cash or food stamps to participate. There is no limit to the number of food packages purchased by each person.

During the month, two hours of community service must be completed for each Share package purchased. Service may be given in any way as long as it is done without charge. Each host site welcomes participants to work on distribution day to complete the required community service.

Those who are disabled or ill and cannot work as a volunteer can write letters as suggested by the Share Tampa Bay Program. In some host sites, a volunteer hour bank is available to those who are completely disabled and cannot do any type of volunteer work. At some host sites, an outreach ministry is available to those who are homebound.

The host sites are:

St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, 8400 Monarch Drive, Port Richey, (813) 856-3729; Asbury United Methodist Church, 4204 Thys Road, New Port Richey, (813) 937-8395; Hudson United Methodist Church, 13123 U.S. 19, Hudson, (813) 863-0789; Faith United Methodist Church, 12128 State Road 52, Hudson, (813) 868-0283; and First Baptist Church, 4807 Mile Stretch Road, Holiday, (813) 937-3041.
