A Miami woman who reportedly said she wanted to meet God drove her car into a canal Wednesday, taking her 5-year-old son and a friend with her, police said.
"She looked over and said to the friend, "I want to talk with God,' and accelerated and drove into the canal," said Metro-Dade police spokesman Dan Blocker.
The friend, who escaped from the submerged car with only minor injuries, told detectives that the 34-year-old mother was suffering from depression, Blocker said.
The mother died. Her son was in critical condition Wednesday night, said Bruce Fresko, a Jackson Memorial Hospital administrator.
Metro-Dade firefighters and divers pulled the two out of the water, a fire official said.
The 27-year-old friend, whose name also was withheld, was treated at Baptist Hospital for a minor injury to her hand, said hospital spokeswoman Anne Streeter.
"I just dove into the water and went over, and she (the friend) was telling that the girl was crazy, "She's crazy, she was trying to commit suicide,' " said bystander Wayne Cook who attempted a rescue. "I couldn't save them."
