Flu vaccine's benefits for those at risk to be stressed

Emphasizing vaccinations' protection against flu and pneumonia, especially for those at high risk, is the focus of a joint effort by the HRS Pasco County Public Health Unit and other agencies and organizations.

People have a greater chance of suffering severe effects from the flu if they:

Have with long-term heart or lung problems, including children with asthma.

Live in nursing homes or other long-term care settings that house people with long-term medical conditions.

Are 65 or older.

Have diabetes or see a doctor regularly for kidney problems, anemia or immune problems.

Are children or teens on long-term aspirin treatment.

To kick off the fall and winter adult immunization campaign, "Cardinal Rules for Winter Lung Health" is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barnett Bank's Main Street Conference Center, 6128 U. S. 19, New Port Richey.

The guest speaker will be Carol W. Knapik, RRT, program associate with the American Lung Association of Gulfcoast Florida. She will offer a common sense approach to colds, flu, pneumonia and other respiratory ailments.

A second event is scheduled from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the CARES Senior Center's Bingo Hall, 14205 Old Dixie Highway, Hudson. Dr. Marc J. Yacht, public health unit director, will discuss "Winter's Coming." The program will focus on remaining healthy during the winter months and is sponsored by the CARES Senior Health Clinic. To provide opportunities for residents to receive flu and pneumonia immunizations, the public health unit and the CARES centers have set up the following programs:

Zephyrhills _ The annual fall health fair is scheduled at the Zephyrhills Multipurpose Senior Center, 4645 Airport Road, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22. "She's Baaack!! _ Miss Influenza," is making a return trip to the annual health fair to encourage visitors to obtain their immunizations. To make an appointment, call the center at (813) 788-0471.

New Port Richey _ Adult immunizations and information will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Claude Pepper Center, 6640 Van Buren. To make an appointment, call (813) 844-3077.

Hudson _ The Hudson Senior Health Clinic, 14205 Old Dixie Highway, will be the site for adult immunizations and information from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27. To make an appointment, call (813) 868-2055.

Flu vaccine shots and pneumonia shots are also available at the following locations. Call for a schedule.

Pneumonia shots are $11 and flu shots are $5.
