Tampa Catholic unveiled an improved passing game Friday night as quarterback Andre Stewart threw for three touchdowns to complement Elijah Powell's 203 yards rushing and lead the Crusaders to a 33-6 victory over Lake Placid in a Class 2A, District 6 game at Jesuit's Corral Stadium.
Tampa Catholic remains undefeated in four games and is 3-0 in district play. The Green Dragons dropped to 1-4, 0-3.
Stewart, a junior, sat out most of this week's practice sessions with back spasms, but he showed his game readiness, completing 10 of 18 attempts for 128 yards and no interceptions.
"Our game plan was to pound the ball at them the first couple of plays," Stewart said. "We knew they were going to bring it up to stop the run. Then we brought it up top."
Powell, a senior tailback, burst through the middle for a 50-yard gain on the second play of the game. Two plays later, Stewart hit sophomore Andre Miller in the end zone with a 30-yard touchdown strike. William Stevens' extra point put TC up 7-0.
Lake Placid's first drive ended with a fumble by Bobby Caraway, one of three lost fumbles by the Green Dragons; Brian Calzone recovered. But penalties _ the Crusaders were flagged for nine, costing them 107 yards in the first half _prevented TC from running away with the game early. In the second quarter, TC's Torey Thomas picked off a Derrick Hawthorne pass and returned it 34 yards for an apparant touchdown, but the play was called back due to a clip.
