A 7-year-old girl might have thwarted a rape about 4 a.m. Monday when she was awakened by a man climbing through her bedroom window. The girl told authorities she woke up when the man was halfway through the window above her bed and hanging over her, a Sheriff's Office report said. He pulled her to a sitting position and told her to lie back down, but she pushed his face with her hands and told him, "No," and, "Go away." The man fled, but the child noticed her underpants had been pulled down to her calves, the report said. Deputies found the screen to the child's window had been removed. The man is described as a bearded black male in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, wearing a dirty white T-shirt and a red bandanna. His voice was described as hoarse.
Agency won't be charged
in handling of rape case
NEW PORT RICHEY _ Human Development Center officials will not face charges for their handling of an employee rape in the center parking lot four weeks ago, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Jon Powers. Sheriff's officials asked the state to decide if the center violated a state law by delaying in notifying authorities about the rape. The woman reported the Sept. 15 rape to the Sheriff's Office on Oct. 2. HDC officials allegedly learned of the attack between Sept. 16 and 23, but did not call police. HDC spokesman Vaughn Jones said the woman asked that a report not be filed with authorities.
