A list of 10 candidates was chosen Tuesday from more than 450 applicants for the executive director's job at the Department of Revenue.
A search committee appointed by the governor and Cabinet quickly agreed on the first five finalists:
James Zingale, the interim director at revenue and former staff director of the House Appropriations Committee; Larry Fuchs, deputy comptroller in the state Department of Banking and Finance and a former interim director at revenue; J. Larry Durrence, executive director of the Florida Tax and Budget Reform Commission; Bill Tabor, director of the division of parimutuel wagering at the state Department of Business Regulation; and Richard W. Laliberte, an Orlando consultant who headed the tax department for the Walt Disney World Co.
Completing the list took more time, discussion and compromise, but the committee settled on: Susan M. Antonio, chief financial officer of an Orlando real estate conglomerate and former CFO of the Florida High Speed Rail Corp.; William E. Coyle, a lawyer and tax auditor for one of the revenue department's out-of-state offices, in Pittsburgh; James Joiner of Apollo Beach, former director of administration for Baynard, Harrell, Mascara, Ostow & Ulrich in St. Petersburg; Bruce A. Strauss, a retired Internal Revenue Service employee from Jacksonville; and Carla Bernabei Talrico, assistant city manager of Miami Beach.
The 10 will be interviewed Oct. 26 and 27, and the committee will recommend three to five finalists Oct. 27. The governor and Cabinet are to name a new executive director Nov. 4.
