Young, Jablonski third in rankings

The Lightning's goaltending combination of Wendell Young and Pat Jablonski has been stingy.

The pair has the third-best goals-against average in the league as of Wednesday at 2.45.

The New York Rangers' tandem of Mike Richter and John Vanbiesbrouck have the best at 2.25. Vancouver's Kirk McLean has the second-best mark at 2.33.

Jablonski, whom the Lightning acquired in a trade with three other players from St. Louis for future considerations, has the best save percentage at .938. He allowed just five goals in 80 shots.

Keeping gloves on

Major fighting penalties have been down in the first 43 games of this season. There have been just 41 such penalties compared to 105 at this point last year _ a 61 percent drop.

Pick your star

Balloting for the 1993 All-Star Game on Feb. 6 at the Montreal Forum began Thursday. Candidates from the Lightning are defenseman Joe Reekie, left wing Mikael Andersson and center Anatoli Semenov.

Each team must have one representative. There are 112 names on the ballot.

Fans can vote at games at Expo Hall or in ballots in USA Today. Fans also can write in players who are not on the ballot.

Hey, collectors

Don't bother trying to get a Chris Kontos rookie card. Don't bother trying to get any Kontos trading card. Although Tampa Bay's right wing played in his first NHL game in 1982, not one of the four teams he has played for has had a trading card made of him.

"He's not in the current set," said Kontos' agent, Harry Francis. "Hopefully, they will put him in the second printing. It could be a collector's item."

Right wing Martin Simard was scratched for Thursday night's game against Toronto. . . . Defenseman Roman Hamrlik of Czechoslovakia was in Atlanta on Thursday practicing with the Knights (the Lightning's farm team) because his Canadian visa was not yet completed. He will join the team in Buffalo tonight and is expected to play.
