A 22-year-old woman was charged Wednesday with abusing her child after a teacher at Crystal River Primary School noticed marks on the girl's back and legs. The woman, whose name is withheld to protect the child's identity, was charged with aggravated child abuse, according to jail records. She is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail. The woman refused to discuss the matter when questioned by investigators, however, the child told authorities the marks were the result of punishment by her mother. State Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services workers said the marks were made by an electrical cord or a belt.
Swiftmud to conduct controlled burns
BROOKSVILLE _ The land management section of the Southwest Florida Water Management District will conduct controlled burns in the district's East Lake Panasoffkee (Berry Tract) property, 2 miles east of Lake Panasoffkee. The managed burns are routine maintenance for district-owned property and will be conducted at various times during June. Approximately 60 acres will be burned in small, manageable units. Prescribed burns are conducted only when weather conditions are optimal to meet the desired objectives and to minimize impact upon the public. Although every effort will be made to ensure that smoke does not affect homes or highways, drivers and residents should exercise caution if smoke reduces visibility on the area's roads.
