Ninth hole causes Mochrie trouble again

For the second consecutive day, the troublesome ninth hole ruined an otherwise outstanding round for Sarasota's Dottie Mochrie.

Mochrie had a par 71 during the first round and a 70 on Friday. If she had only parred No.

9 the first two days, Mochrie would be just one stroke behind leader Cindy Rarick.

On Thursday, Mochrie's first encounter with the 376-yard hole _ which features a thin, twisting fairway and a tiny green surrounded by five sand traps _ ended with a double bogey 6.

She evidently didn't learn from her experience. She was 4 under Friday until she got to her final hole of the day: No.

9. Mochrie went from one bunker to the other, duffed a chip and then missed a short putt en route to a triple bogey 7.

Par Kerdyk's friend

Playing a steady, no-risk round for the second straight day, Tracy Kerdyk chalked up another 69 to stay in contention, just three shots off the pace.

"You have to be patient. I try and make par my friend," she said.

Kerdyk had 12 pars, four birdies and two bogeys to fulfill her objective prior to the tournament.

"I thought if I shot 2 under every day, I'd be in contention," she said.

No signs of sickness

Jan Stephenson wasn't feeling well, but it was hard to tell by her second consecutive 69. She was at par for the day until birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 pushed her near the top of the leaderboard.

"I love the majors. I've been working so hard that I got sick," she said. "Now I have a sore throat and a cold."

Sheehan can relax

Now that she's a member of the Hall of Fame, Patty Sheehan doesn't get as excited about major tournaments.

"I used to get twitchy and a little bit on edge. I don't do that anymore," she said. "I just seem to be a little more relaxed about them now. I don't get as stressed out as I used to."

Still, Sheehan hasn't completely lost her drive to win.

"My No. 1 goal is to win the Open again and be the player of the year," she said.
