Northeast's Hooker signs with Odessa Junior College in Texas

Jackie Hooker, Northeast High's two-time state shot and discus champion, has signed a letter of intent with Odessa Junior College in Texas.

Hooker will attend on a full athletic scholarship, which is something her other choice, San Jacinto State, wasn't offering.

"They said they had given out all their scholarship money and could only pay for certain things, that they could only do this or that," Hooker said. "With Odessa, everything is paid for."

Hooker, who captured her second straight state shot and discus titles last month, expects to throw the javelin at Odessa along with the shot and discus. The 1992 Times female track athlete of the year, and a three-time all-county selection, said she might play basketball too.

Tennis: Chris Starnes, a senior at Seminole High School, has accepted a tennis scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Lamkin signs: Doug Lamkin, a two-year starter at offensive guard for Clearwater High School, has received a partial athletic scholarship to Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., Tornadoes head coach Tom Bostic said Wednesday.

Lamkin, a 5-foot-10, 230-pounder, was on Clearwater teams that went a combined 18-4 over the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

Culver-Stockton is an NAIA school in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The football team went 1-8-1 in 1992.
