Eighth-graders rewarded for science, math work

The Suncoast Carrollwood branch of the American Association of University Women presented awards of U.S. savings bonds and certificates to eighth-graders who exhibited scholarship, interest and growth in science and/or math.

Plaques also were presented to the principals of the pupils' schools.

Elizabeth Reed, a member of the association's Scholarship Awards Committee, presented awards to Sandra Dailey (science) and Catherine Chai (math) at Van Buren Junior High School. Van Buren principal Dr. Gary Huskey was presented a plaque.

At Ben Hill Junior High School, Helen Walker, also a member of the Scholarship Awards Committee, presented awards to Jeremy Gaw (math) and Tiffiny Gordon (science). A plaque was presented to Ben Hill principal Mitch Muley.

The American Association of University Women is open to anyone who holds a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university.

The branch's activities this month include bridge at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Alice Walker's and 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Betty Raich's. The book group will meet at 10 a.m. June 24 at the home of Doris Black to discuss Acts of Faith by Erich Segal.
