Hawley Somerville Tennant, founder of Holiday Rent A Car and retired president of Avco Finance Co., died Friday (June 11, 1993) at St. Joseph's Hospital, London, Ontario. He was 80.
Mr. Tennant was at his summer home in London, and was hospitalized with heart problems, his son Mac said.
"My father first built Avco from a small company to one of North America's largest consumer finance company. He retired from that in 1968 and two years later out of sheer boredom started Holiday Rent A Car in Canada," he said.
"In 1974, my father opened up his U.S. headquarters in St. Petersburg, and by the time he sold Holiday Rent A Car in 1983 he had built the company to more than 300 locations across North America.
"He was a generous and loving person, benefiting the lives of all who had the opportunity to know him."
In St. Petersburg, Mr. Tennant was a member of the Pasadena Golf and County Club and had attended Pasadena Community Church.
He was on the board of numerous companies and charitable organizations in the United States and Canada and was included in Who's Who in Canada for several years.
In addition to his son, Mac, he is survived by his wife, Jean; four other sons, Jim, Derek, Stuart and John; four daughters, Judy, Caroline, Midge and Cathie; 25 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be in London, Ontario, on June 14.
