City Manager Norman Hickey is one of five finalists vying for the county administrator post in Lee County, Hickey confirmed Saturday. "I was told earlier this week that I am a candidate," he said from his Daytona Beach home.
Hickey's job was eliminated when voters changed the city's form of government. He is set to leave the city at the end of June.
The Lee County position would pay $96,000. An advisory committee of Lee County residents and business owners will whittle the list of five to three Saturday, said Lee County Commissioner Ray Judah.
Hickey said that if he is not a finalist, he will continue to pursue other opportunities. "There is an enormous amount of opportunity in local government right now," he said. "I have two other job interviews within a month, and I'm still interested in the Research Triangle Institute in Durham, N.C."
Although he spent just a year here, Hickey said he has no regrets about serving during such a tumultuous time. Perspective, Section D.
