Free-meal program available at schools

The Citrus County school system will sponsor the "Summer Food Service Program for Children" at various school sites beginning June 21 and ending July 29.

Similar to the National School Lunch Program, it provides nutritionally balanced meals to needy children regardless of race, color, creed, sex, handicap, age or national origin during vacation when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. All children 18 years of age or younger, both enrolled and non-enrolled, are eligible for a free lunch .

Summer feeding sites at schools provide meals to all children in the immediate vicinity in addition to those enrolled in summer school. Any child not enrolled in the summer school program but wishing to receive a free lunch must register at the appropriate school.

The following is a list of schools participating in the food program and the dates for registration:

Lecanto Middle School and High School, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday.

Hernando Elementary, Lakeview School and Pleasant Grove Elementary, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., today.
